![]() (Pic Above- http://gunhilda.livejournal.com/tag/travel ) | Little Round Top was occupied by Union troops just before night fall on the evening of July 1, 1863. Securing Little Round Top allowed the Union to position themselves and defend this important end of the Union line. Big Round Top faced the Confederate position at Devil's Den. In order to retrieve the higher ground, Confederate forces had to march up a rocky slope towards the Union position. Due to Big Round Tops terrain, Confederate troops were unsuccessful capturing the higher ground. Watch the clip on the left from the movie Gettysburg which demonstrates what happened at Little and Big Round Top. |
